Senses working overtime #284

Grapefruit and why I can't eat any anymore

To be clear, the science supports using masks, with recent studies suggesting that they could save lives in different ways: research shows that they cut down the chances of both transmitting and catching the coronavirus, and some studies hint that masks might reduce the severity of infection if people do contract the disease.

Newman!
Wayne Knight stars in this advert for the mail. Yes, the mail. It never stops....

Twelve great movies are coming...sometime

Including On The Rocks - a repeat pairing of Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray. Looks great too!
An interesting article. An excerpt:

In some societies, such as the U.S. and Netherlands, people are largely driven by pursuits that benefit themselves. They’re expected to seek personal recognition and boost their own social or financial status.

In more collectivist societies, such as South Korea and Chile, high value is placed on the well-being of the larger group – typically their family, but also their workplace or country.

We found that the way parents discipline their children is strongly influenced by these social values, and likely serves to perpetuate these values from one generation to the next.

The search for the grail
(or why finding the original 1977 version verges on the impossible)

A lot of the family are binge watching franchise movies (we've just finished the five Bourne movies frinstance). Might be a good opportunity to go back to 1977! I might have a copy of the original on VHS.

Being Bill

Love Bill Murray? Everybody does!

3 Famous art museums you can visit...

...from your workspace! Seventeen of them!

Brothers

Great piece, pithy and well written, by a younger brother (age 62) about his attempt to reconnect his brotherly bond with his grumpy older brother (64) on a tramping adventure!

Excerpt:

I told Don on the phone that the hike would cement our brotherly bonds and reconnect us to the wilderness where we had spent significant chunks of our young adulthoods. I told him we might find something like peace in alpine meadows and under starry skies. I told him the trip could be life changing, that it would provide us both a much needed reset.

“No thanks,” he said. Don had never been one for big speeches.

“Why not?”

“What’s the point?”

“Fun? Exercise? Living in the moment? Leaving our comfort zones? Getting some clarity and perspective? Rediscovering purpose and connection?” I’m a talker.

“Spare me the inner-life mumbo jumbo,” he said. “You have the luxury of dabbling in that stuff, since you haven’t had a real job in decades.”

Seth Godin's message
The boat is really, really big and we’re all in it.

This is a slog, and there will be another side. It is unevenly distributed, it’s a tragedy and it’s a challenge. But we’re in it together and with care and generosity, we can find perspective, possibility and hope.

Overtime: Warren Ellis' sign-off
Don't be like me.  Get some rest, eat properly, sleep when you can, and turn your phone off once in a while. Nothing wrong with shutting the rest of the world off when you need to. I'll keep an eye on it for you while you're gone. Take a breath, go and look at the sky, hold on tight.  You're doing fine.

1 Cool Uncle George

Great image of the cool fab with his sister Louise in America, 1963. Rest of the story is here in The Immortal Jukebox.

Bill Murray

The curse of genius

Photo by Mike Fox on Unsplash

Really was absorbed by this article looking at how genius happens.

Lazarus - Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree
Speaking of genius - played this non-stop in the car this week.

The Lyrics
Interesting discussion about what the song means. I'm still trying to work out my own version.

Overtime: Warren Ellis

I love this sign off to his recent newsletter. I always wonder if it's a gee up for him and/or a message to us - his faithful hangers on to his every word.

Whatever.

I love it!

You are not bad or stupid or wrong, and you get to walk away from any idiot who insists otherwise. You are your own damn person and you get to run your own damn life. You're good. Hold on tight. See you next week.

Senses working overtime #197

Oh January - boy did you suck!!

Good riddance. And I'm not the only one out there feeling like that. So here's to February! Thanks to Austin Kleon.

Groundhog Day
Hail to you Bill! Yes, it's rolled around again. celebrate with the movie.

Woody

I ordered a book online recently. It arrived. And along with it was a free copy of Woody Woodmansey's autobiography - Spider From Mars. It's not that great. I never would have read it but, hey - it's a free book!

Half way through and it's okay - the usual and averagely written at that. No fault of Woody - he's a drummer. It's mostly about Bowie obviously. More particularly - a band member's take on Bowie and that has limited appeal to me. But, hey, it's a free book! It's a harmless drudge.

On yer bike!

I've been very disappointed by the decision not to back the Mayor London's plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street. Oslo hasn't looked back and the fact it hasn't happened in London is a profoundly short sighted decision.

Rejection
James Whatley recommended this Ted Talk on dealing with rejection - good enough for me! Spend a great 15 minutes!

Overtime Airport!!

Another JW link (chur bro): the new airport in Beijing in a photo essay. Yes, that's a person on the roof in the middle of that picture. As Bill Murray would say: Raz-zil Daz-zil.

4 Hogarth self portrait
Excellent bit on a man and his dog - in this case satirist William Hogarth and his pooch.

5 Your train is delayed. Why?
This is great - a doco that The Lunch Room suggested (The Lunch Room is also a nifty newsletter you should check out).

Overtime

In Groundhog Day, Phil Connors asks his bowling buddy,“What would you do if you were stuck in one place and every day was exactly the same, and nothing that you did mattered?

And his buddy, who’s a little drunk, looks at him and says, “That about sums it up for me.”

Great piece on one of my favourite movies by Austin Kleon.

Been exploring this during the week. Some wonderful technology, great sights and use is only limited by your imagination.

3 Burj Khalifa

While exploring the Google maps trek I came across this one on the Burj Khalifa, a.k.a. the world's tallest building. Amazing scenes!

1 By Jupiter!

The Juno orbiter has sent back this photo. From Jupiter!!!! Not a computerised, this might be what Jupiter looks like, image. No. A photo! Of Jupiter!!!

Wow! You can read more about it here.

2 Anticipation
Carly Simon knew about this a long time ago but this is still fun to read about - the anticipation before an event...

3 Rogue One
I haven't included too much Star Wars stuff of late. Sorry. This update on Rogue One and teaser should ease the pain.

4 Cancel 2016

I'm a glass half full kind of guy (as you know) but even I'm getting beat down a little by the first half of 2016. Nice article by Kimberly Harrington sums up the feelings well.

5 The benefits of writing
I feel good writing daily. Here's why.

Overtime
Bill Murray's Ghostbuster III will he? won't he? is a fabulous read.

Senses working overtime #65

1 Barack - the night guy

Like so many on planet Earth, I am an Obama fan. Unlike Barack, I have always carved out my alone time in the morning. Whenever it's carved out, it's important. Getting a peak into his routines is pretty cool.

2 Proxemics explained
Great little video from Vox on personal space bubbles as studied by Edward T. Hall.

3 OMG

Bobcat on a cactus! How did that happen (thanks to JW for the link).

4 Arsenal in Aussie
Adam (pictured - thanks Ashleigh) sent me this - pretty cool - Aussie tour by the greatest team the world has ever seen!

An overview of Bill's appeal is always good fun.

Great video of Lennon doing Imagine live.

Senses working overtime #40

My last weekend round up from London town before heading back down under. Jacky and I have had an amazing holiday in England and Wales. But all good things...end in a senses working overtime list.

So - 'ere me go 'ere we go 'ere we go...

1 Comics

While here I bought some comics. Yes I did. Fantastic Four, Star Wars and Thor. I bookmarked this article a while ago - helps me justifying my ongoing love affair with comic books.

2 De-vices
Everywhere I go I walk into people who are busy on their devices. What the hell are they always looking at??? Don't they know what all these devices are doing to them?

3 REALLY Old stuff
I have probably posted on this before but what the hell. I love this story of the Mexican church that emerged after being buried by water, or something. Read it again!

4 Roger Dean

I love prog rock and I love Roger Dean's amazing covers. Most of my purchases while here have been prog orientated - Riverside, Lunatic Soul, Steven Wilson and so on. Love prog!

5 James Bond

We saw Spectre while we 'ere innit. I really liked it! Good Bondage fun. This interactive map is also fun and I also may have posted on it before but who cares. It's great fun!

Overtime: some photos for y'all to enjoy! Love Bill Murray!!

Senses working overtime #33

1 Captain America
The next big Marvel movie looks the biznis - Captain America: Civil War (but then, I did think that about The Fantastic Four reboot promo).

2 Floating
I loved this selection of photographs by Nick Layton where people (and phones) float...

3 Puddings
Need a chuckle? Here's a triffic article explaining what Americans and Brits call 'puddings', 'biscuits' ; 'scones' and so on. A hoot!

4 Unsplash

More stunning photography from the good people at Unsplash for your sensual perusal (I think that's a thing).

5 Bill Murray
I've always been a fan - a National Lampoon record with Bill as a DJ was my hilarious introduction to his genius.

This is a pretty cool read - about the cult of personality that is taking shape around his public persona.

Overtime: Thought I'd keep with the Bill-a-thon concept for the bonus this week.

My first Bill Murray movie experience was Meatballs. And, no apologies, I LOVE Meatballs.

Senses working overtime #22

1 360 views
I have visited this site a few times and I always find something new that delights me. Try it if you haven't already and marvel at how great modern technology can be!

2 PLUTO!

No!! Not the Disney character...the planet. Apparently it is one again, as these stunning photos prove conclusively. It sure LOOKS like a planet.

Again though - technology eh? Wicked!

3 Star Wars - the logo!

This week's Star Wars feature is pretty damn cool - how the logo was designed. I know, perhaps at first glance that doesn't SEEM like such an exciting thing but, believe me, this article is a veritable treasure trove for SW obsessives like me. Take a look! Go on!

4 Beach Boys - How 'bout that Carl Wilson?!
I've been listening to a lot of BB material this week. Here are two of my favourite BB songs with the mighty Carl on lead vocals. What a voice! And so good to see the three Wilson brothers playing together.

5 Bill Murray
I love Bill for the man he is and the man he doesn't want to be. This article lists a few other reasons why I love him.

Overtime: Go The All Blacks
The rugby World Cup is now on and among the many NZ products to hone in on a marketing opportunity is one of our milk companies. It's a pretty cool idea!
