Senses working overtime #431

1 The feeling this week

2 Listening: The Album Years

I'm not usually a podcast guy but this one from Steven Wilson and Tim Bowness who together make up No-Man, is terrific.

Each episode centres on a specific year and they discuss a selection of albums from that year.

I'm still reading Wilson's Limited Edition Of One - it's one of those books you don't want to finish!

3 Watching: FIFA Women's World Cup 2023

We're at the quarter final stage now. Without participation from the USA.

The seismic reverberations of that USA/ Sweden game will be felt for a long while.

Come on Sweden!! Amanda Ilestedt has been immense so far. Blackstenius and Hurtig have also made a big impact. Yes, they all play for Arsenal F.C.

4 Listening: my favourite album by The Band - Northern Lights-Southern Cross

5 R.I.P. Robbie Roberston

Overtime: Writer Jeanette Winterson on the process of life:

“We live in a society that peddles solutions, whether it’s solutions to those extra pounds you’re carrying, or to your thinning hair, or to your loss of appetite, loss of love. We are always looking for solutions, but actually what we are engaged in is a process throughout life during which you never get it right. You have to keep being open, you have to keep moving forward. You have to keep finding out who you are and how you are changing, and only that makes life tolerable.”

2 Reading: Steven Wilson's Limited Edition Of One

And it's excellent! So is this explanation of the genesis of the book via YouTube.

3 Watching: Steven Wilson - What's in my bag

Adam put me onto this YouTube collection from Amoeba Records. Love it!!

4 The 100 best movies of the past ten decades!

Great list from Time's Stephanie Zacharek

5 Listening: The Jayhawks' Madman from Rainy Day Music.

Senses working overtime #211

1 Cool Uncle George

Great image of the cool fab with his sister Louise in America, 1963. Rest of the story is here in The Immortal Jukebox.

Bill Murray

...is appearing in The Dead Don't DieJim Jarmusch's zombie film. Reason enough to see it!

The curse of genius

Photo by Mike Fox on Unsplash

Really was absorbed by this article looking at how genius happens.

Lazarus - Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree
Speaking of genius - played this non-stop in the car this week.

The Lyrics
Interesting discussion about what the song means. I'm still trying to work out my own version.

Overtime: Warren Ellis

I love this sign off to his recent newsletter. I always wonder if it's a gee up for him and/or a message to us - his faithful hangers on to his every word.

Whatever.

I love it!

You are not bad or stupid or wrong, and you get to walk away from any idiot who insists otherwise. You are your own damn person and you get to run your own damn life. You're good. Hold on tight. See you next week.

Senses working overtime #61

1 Grace Slick

I think I've always been in love with Grace. She is so wonderful, so talented, so funny, with such a beautiful spirit. You get a sense of it as she discusses writing White Rabbit.

2 A movie written by algorithm
Hmm - not sure what I think about this - Sunspring is a sci-fi movie written by artificial intelligence. Definitely fits into 'senses working overtime', though.

3 Girl squad
This NY Times 'report' on the Hillary Clinton/ Liz Warren meeting is hilarious!! I wish I could write clever stuff like this.

4 Brain Pickings
I love tuning into the more cerebral delights of Brain Pickings. This latest piece on reading centres attention on Hermann Hesse in a stunning way!

5 Ellen's set

I saw this picture on my Twitter feed and while it didn't inspire me to go to the link, it did make me admire the set: the white square seating (which allows the humans to float via their darker clothing); the contrasting natural textures of the (fake?) wooden coffee table with book/(fake?) flowers/coffee mugs (not cups); fake cityscape with palm trees projected onto the big screen behind her; the highly polished floor. All gleaming, all fake warmth or fake expanse. It's actually really really well done!

Song of the week and, yes, I love Steven Wilson's stuff: Lazurus by Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree:

Senses working overtime #60

1  Pep

It's another Sgt Pepper's anniversary and just when you thought it had all been written something springs up to surprise you. The Greatest? the debate rages on...

2 Mystery train
I like this guy - he embarks on a metaphor (visits to his posts are like a train coming into an abandoned station, and not very frequently) and just extends it without mercy! Gotta love that!

3 Sadiq Khan
How wonderful that there is a muslim mayor of London. Londoners rock!! This is a great Guardian article about what he's up to over Ramadan which started this week.

4 Speaking of Ramadan
What is it? This is what it's about!

5 The Ercolines - Woodstock icons

I remain fascinated by the original Woodstock festival in 1969. I love this couple's story!
They met at Dino’s Bar, a local diner, when Bobbi was with another man, a waiter there, in February of 1969.
“She was gorgeous, are you kidding me? Long, blonde hair, she was a gorgeous girl. She’s a gorgeous woman,” Ercoline said.

Overtime
Song of the week is Porcupine Trees's Buying New Soul.

Senses working overtime #10

1 Take time
I like this 'stop and smell the roses' idea - stealing time.

2 The future photograph

I was talking with Fran about the value of the photograph in these digital days and then I read this erudite explanation of what's happening with photos these days. Serendipitous.

3 Learning to let go
I enjoyed reading this passage from a short article about building a bridge:
Be humble. Do not boost your ego. Know that your existence cannot be stopped because of one incident or two or three or four. You are in this body to fulfill a purpose in life. To complete a task. To accomplish something greater than yourself. To transcend. Your existence is extremely powerful. Let the wounds heal. Fight the battle with yourself and come out on the top. The goal of life is to progressively become egoless. Know that you only have to answer to yourself.

4 Lost gentleman traditions
I like to think chivalry's not dead (it just smells that way).

5 Blackfield
The Purdmobile has been grooving to Blackfield in general this week, and Blackfield II in particular and My Gift Of Silence even more in particular!!

Overtime: Not sure if he does or not. I have no idea how it's doctored if it is. I prefer to think he does really do this and then go  WOW!!
