Senses working overtime #491

1 Wellington

This week was largely spent in our capital city. It's getting a bad press at the moment with less foot traffic in the CBD but while Unity Books are on Willis and Arty Bees, Slow Boat Records are in or near Cuba St mall, I will still have plenty of reasons to visit on a regular basis.

2 World of Wearable Arts

Jacky's thing more than mine but I still really enjoyed the sensual experience.

3 Listening to: Jimmy Buffett - Living and Dying in 3/4 Time

One of my purchases from Slow Boat Records. Try Come Monday.

4 Reading: The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys

One of my purchases from Unity Books.

5 Tasting: Hot! Like a Mexican tacos

Overtime: Neil Finn

There's a certain good fortune in having a moderate amount of success.

Senses working overtime 208

Baby, you're a star (Prince)

This little bundle of joy has dominated the week - instantly making me the happiest new grandad on the planet.

My favourite response to the news on my Facebook page was from Karen Boyes and her 'Squeeeeeeee'.

2 Drive, he sd (Robert Creeley)

Been racking up the miles between Waipukurau/ Hastings/ Palmerston North and listening to Radio Wozza.

The Miracle Of Life by Yes (from the much maligned but I like it Union album) summed up things pretty well.

Beach Boys FAQ

Been reading this along with Eat Pray Love this week - as I'm back at work, predictably - the reading has slowed down. I'm a keen BB fan - in this order of BBs: Carl, Dennis, Brian, Al, Bruce, Blondie, Ricky, David...and a distant last - Mike Love.

The book is an honest appraisal and has some interesting asides. I can recommend this edition of the FAQ series.

Good Vibrations

My restaurant rule is: I'll always order a sticky toffee pudding if it's on the menu.

My Beach Boys rule is: I'll always (always) listen to this song if it pops up on any format (Radio Wozza, compilation, radio...anywhere).

It has the best things about them: Carl Wilson, harmonies, Brian Wilson's musical genius.

And (this video is a good example), the worst thing about them: the embarrassing Mike Love

Surf's Up

I also revisited this 1966 clip of Brian singing Surf's up. This song will take me a lifetime to untangle and I don't think I'll ever fully explore it.

Here it is with Carl's album version for comparison.

Overtime: Sage advice to end from Seth Godin

Don’t try to create and analyze at the same time

John Cage pointed out they’re different processes. Doing one will interfere with the other.

What will you create today? You can analyze it tomorrow.

Senses working overtime #22

I have visited this site a few times and I always find something new that delights me. Try it if you haven't already and marvel at how great modern technology can be!

2 PLUTO!

No!! Not the Disney character...the planet. Apparently it is one again, as these stunning photos prove conclusively. It sure LOOKS like a planet.

Again though - technology eh? Wicked!

3 Star Wars - the logo!

This week's Star Wars feature is pretty damn cool - how the logo was designed. I know, perhaps at first glance that doesn't SEEM like such an exciting thing but, believe me, this article is a veritable treasure trove for SW obsessives like me. Take a look! Go on!

4 Beach Boys - How 'bout that Carl Wilson?!
I've been listening to a lot of BB material this week. Here are two of my favourite BB songs with the mighty Carl on lead vocals. What a voice! And so good to see the three Wilson brothers playing together.

5 Bill Murray
I love Bill for the man he is and the man he doesn't want to be. This article lists a few other reasons why I love him.

Overtime: Go The All Blacks
The rugby World Cup is now on and among the many NZ products to hone in on a marketing opportunity is one of our milk companies. It's a pretty cool idea!
