Senses working overtime #493

1 Theme of the week: Slow recovery

Photo by Sofia S on Unsplash

2 Reading: Joan Baez - And A Voice To Sing With

3 Listening: Joan Baez - Diamonds and Rust

One of her best, try Hello In There if you just want one.

4 Watching: Macca doing Now and Then

Another view of The Beatles version here (but be warned - it gets emotional)

5 Listening: WTWMC - Beasties

75 songs now with two weeks to go.

Overtime: Kindness

Being kind to others is mostly about your actions.

Being kind to yourself is mostly about your thoughts.

Senses working overtime #438

1 The feeling this week (first week of study break)

2 Watching: Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid

Having just finished Paul Newman's autobiography, I have been trying in vain to find his movies to watch. Slim pickin's on Netflix and Disney so went to my DVD collection for this one.

I've watched it many times because of my love for William Goldman's work. First half is glorious but the Bolivia section suffers by comparison. Newman and Redford are brilliant - goes without saying I guess.

3 Reading: Anne Tyler - French Braid

It's a study break so a good time to catch up on my reading pile with this and the next few being read this week (turns out I bought this twice - fooled by different covers!).

4 Reading: Louis L'Amour - Utah Blaine

Always love to read a western or two in my break.

5 Listening: Joan Baez - Farewell Angelina

Overtime:

Child development author Joseph Chilton Pearce reminds parents (and all leaders) of an important truth:

"What we are teaches the child far more than what we say, so we must be what we want our children to become."

Senses working overtime #427

1 How I felt this week

2 Reading: Lionel Messi

How Lionel deals with anxiety. Excellent article.

3 Reading: Marianne Faithfull - memories, dreams and reflections

I finished Loud in New Plymouth and needed something to get me through until I got home, so I picked this up from the little secondhand bookshop by the library. Pretty sure I read it years ago but it's a dim recollection and I'm enjoying her prose style all over again.

4 Listening: Joan Baez - Farewell Angelina

We stopped off at the secondhand shop in Turakina on the way home from New Plymouth and I found a copy of this in good condition for $10.

Sleep is important.

4 June Sunset - Sarojini Naidu

Here shall my heart find its haven of calm,
By rush-fringed rivers and rain-fed streams
That glimmer thro' meadows of lily and palm.
Here shall my soul find its true repose
Under a sunset sky of dreams
Diaphanous, amber and rose.
The air is aglow with the glint and whirl
Of swift wild wings in their homeward flight,
Sapphire, emerald, topaz, and pearl.
Afloat in the evening light.

A brown quail cries from the tamarisk bushes,
A bulbul calls from the cassia-plume,
And thro' the wet earth the gentian pushes
Her spikes of silvery bloom.
Where'er the foot of the bright shower passes
Fragrant and fresh delights unfold;
The wild fawns feed on the scented grasses,
Wild bees on the cactus-gold.

An ox-cart stumbles upon the rocks,
And a wistful music pursues the breeze
From a shepherd's pipe as he gathers his flocks
Under the pipal-trees.
And a young Banjara driving her cattle
Lifts up her voice as she glitters by
In an ancient ballad of love and battle
Set to the beat of a mystic tune,
And the faint stars gleam in the eastern sky
To herald a rising moon.

5 Two-Gun Kid

This pin-up is crazy good!

Overtime: The Water Is Wide - Dylan and Baez

Sublime. I listened to this version from The Rolling Thunder Revue tour three times on repeat each day this week!

It doesn't need any visuals - it does it all.

Senses working overtime #219

Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue

He's been all over my week this week! Mojo magazine had a cover story in the June issue (above); I watched the Scorsese doco on Netflix; played Hard Rain and the Live 1975 albums, and generally had a Bob-a-thon.

Only fitting then that I share five things about those experiences this week.

So enjoy, a time tunnel back to 1975/1976!

2 Marty's Bob Dylan documentary

3 Bob and Joan

Joan is a straight shooter but her Dylan dress up is a hoot!

Joni and Bob and Roger

Coyote (with Bob on guitar and Roger McGuinn at Gordon Lightfoot's home) is a stand out from the Scorsese movie. The song is about the tour, according to Roger!

Allen and Bob
This scene at Jack Kerouac's graveside in Lowell is also weird. What is Dylan thinking as Allen reads the Jack excerpt?

Overtime: The River is Wide - a traditional song that Bob and Joan make theirs for everymore!
