Senses working overtime #365

1 Miniature dioramas

2 Tsundoku (literally translates to mean 'reading pile')

3 Proof - Tiana Clark

I once made a diorama from a shoebox
for a man I loved. I was never a crafty person,

but found tiny items at an art store and did my best
to display the beginning bud of our little love,

a scene recreating our first kiss in his basement
apartment, origin story of an eight-year marriage.

In the dollhouse section, I bought a small ceiling fan.
Recreated his black leather couch, even found miniscule

soda cans for the cardboard counters that I cut and glued.
People get weird about divorce. Think it’s contagious.

Think it dirty. I don’t need to make it holy, but it purifies—
It’s clear. Sometimes the science is simple. Sometimes

people love each other but don’t need each other
anymore. Though, I think the tenderness can stay

(if you want it too). I forgive and keep forgiving,
mostly myself. People still ask, what happened?

I know you want a reason, a caution to avoid, but
life rarely tumbles out a cheat sheet. Sometimes

nobody is the monster. I keep seeing him for the first
time at the restaurant off of West End where we met

and worked and giggled at the micros. I keep seeing
his crooked smile and open server book fanned with cash

before we would discover and enter another world
and come back barreling to this one, astronauts

for the better and for the worse, but still spectacular
as we burned back inside this atmosphere to live

separate lives inside other shadow boxes we cannot see.
I remember I said I hate you once when we were driving

back to Nashville, our last long distance. I didn’t mean it.
I said it to hurt him, and it did. I regret that I was capable

of causing pain. I think it’s important to implicate
the self. The knife shouldn’t exit the cake clean.

There is still some residue, some proof of puncture,
some scars you graze to remember the risk.

Senses working overtime #324

1 Nitch

Joni Mitchell // "Everybody has a superficial side and a deep side, but this culture doesn’t place much value on depth...we don’t have shamans or soothsayers, and depth isn’t encouraged or understood. Surrounded by this shallow, glossy society we develop a shallow side...and we become attracted to fluff... But along with developing my superficial side, I always nurtured a deeper longing, so even when I was falling into the trap of that other kind of love, I was hip to what I was doing."

3 Five words that will open doors for you

4 Black Widow

I was looking forward to this pre pandemic. Not sure now, after reading this.

5 Coffee - the invisible addiction

Coffee houses have been around awhile

Apparently, "Something like 90% of humans ingest caffeine regularly, making it the most widely used psychoactive drug in the world, and the only one we routinely give to children (commonly in the form of fizzy drinks)."

Overtime: Believing is seeing

They say that seeing is believing.

But it might be more true that believing leads to seeing.

It’s often easier to discover the truth if we believe it’s there in the first place.

Senses working overtime #219

1 Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue

He's been all over my week this week! Mojo magazine had a cover story in the June issue (above); I watched the Scorsese doco on Netflix; played Hard Rain and the Live 1975 albums, and generally had a Bob-a-thon.

Only fitting then that I share five things about those experiences this week.

So enjoy, a time tunnel back to 1975/1976!

2 Marty's Bob Dylan documentary

3 Bob and Joan

Joan is a straight shooter but her Dylan dress up is a hoot!

4 Joni and Bob and Roger

Coyote (with Bob on guitar and Roger McGuinn at Gordon Lightfoot's home) is a stand out from the Scorsese movie. The song is about the tour, according to Roger!

5 Allen and Bob
This scene at Jack Kerouac's graveside in Lowell is also weird. What is Dylan thinking as Allen reads the Jack excerpt?

Overtime: The River is Wide - a traditional song that Bob and Joan make theirs for everymore!

Great piece from the gifted Thomas Oppong about action! Do it! Make the great leap forward. Okay, you could start by just reading about it I guess. Here it is. Read it! Now! What are you waiting for?

2 Celebrating Len

Best thing I read this week - an obit for Len Herzstein. A Giants 'balldude', a regular joe, who lived well and has died age 93.

3 Lame Donald duck

Excellent piece about Donald Trump's  lame duckhood.

4 Greatest albums by women

Excellent run down of some outstanding music. How many do you own/have listened to?
