Senses working overtime #217

Brain mush

Jewels is again slightly late this week - my brain was mush on Friday night (when I usually compile this thing). By Friday my brain had reached overload and it's a thing people! Here's the science behind that idea!

2 Viv Albertine

Wow - she's one bad motorfinger. Great seond hander though after Clothes etc. Recommended but not for the faint of heart - Viv is honest. About everything!

Sleep

Excellent design but not a pillow you'd want to speep with.

Yesterday

Is here. Gonna make an effort to see this one! It's currently playing in Waipukurau!

Sarah Bernhardt

The world's first celebrity was born 175 years ago.

Overtime: Walt

Time for some Song of Myself 4. As Austin Kleon says - 'a good poem for battling the onslaught of social media'.

Senses working overtime #216

Vinyl
This week's vinyl obsessives picture for your delight

Purpose

Photo by Michael Heuser on Unsplash

Nice indication that having a purpose in life allows you to live longer. Cool cool.

Earl

Thom Hickey, the author of TIJ, in the foreground (probably)

Great Immortal Jukebox post on Earl Bostic which actually tells you more about the writer of Immortal Jukebox, Thom Hickey, than Earl, and that is super fine with me.

Seinfeld night!

Great look at two iconic Seinfeld episodes that eviscerate Los Angeles.

The Rise Of Skywalker

Wahoo. Can't wait! JJ Adams is on board. If it has his visual panache and The Last Jedi's intellectual heft it will be the perfect end to the latest (last?) trilogy.

Overtime: Genius sign off from Warren Ellis:

Take a breath. Feel your feet on the ground. You're standing on a ball that's spinning at a thousand miles an hour. And the ball is moving through space at sixty seven thousand miles an hour. You're doing all that without even trying. Whatever the next week brings, it's not going to be too much trouble for someone moving at sixty seven thousand miles an hour while spinning around at 1000mph, is it? You can do anything. See you next week, speedy.

Senses working overtime #215

Is it rolling Bob?
Really looking forward to seeing this on Netflix when our new TV arrives. It's one of my fav Dylan periods.

The Book of Kells
If illuminated medieval manuscripts doesn't float your boat, you're reading the wrong blog! This is exciting news!

Cultosaurus Erectus

I've been looking for a good copy of this for ages - mainly because I love the cover. Finally got a copy and lo and behold - the music is actually good too (I love the 1976 to 1981 period of the band)

Ten facts about Oh, The Places You'll Go!

1984
Just finished Keep The Aspidistra Flying. Wow. An amazing read. And I still remember reading this all those years ago. Powerful!

His vocals are fantastic on the Monkees' hit: A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You.

Senses working overtime #214

A week of busy busy
No time to dwell in the interweb this week, means a week of work and fixing up the house with new furniture dominated. My senses haven't been too assaulted then.

But, I did go to The Monkees show in the Auckland Town Hall. So my JFTT is dominated by them this week. Hey hey...

Daydream Believer
The Auckland crowd loved this, sang along and thought of Davy!

Joanne

Mike is a little frail now and not in the best of health it appears, but he fronted in Auckland and left an impression on me. Unfortunately he didn't do this song, but it remains a favourite of mine!

The Girl I Know Somewhere
My mate Greg (middle below) gave me his Monkees albums a while back. Recently he passed on his two Monkees singles to me as well, including this little gem.

The three amigos go to The Monkees!

Senses working overtime #213

1 Vinyl heaven
It's been a funny old week. But then I connected up my turntable after a long time in storage. It felt good! This week's edition is late. Wah wah. Cry me a river. Here are five plus vinyl celebrations.

Senses working overtime #212

1 It's all about purpose.

House warming

We have finally moved into our house over the weekend - hence why this week's edition is late. Sharp intake of breath!

My staff at school gave me this really cool house warming gift. It's beside me as I type - a Meyer Lemon tree and it smells divine!!

The mode of transport used this week was interesting.

We're talking a small truck. It was adequate for the moving house job but a real bone rattler. And the Bluetooth didn't work. So I had to rely on radio. Yeech. I fit bits of about 5 different radio station demographics.

Anyway. This came on and I turned it up LOUD and put up with the static as the truck bounced and heaved its way.

Failure
Loved this image from some clever person.

Samantha and Asher

Big part of the weekend was calling in on Asher as we picked up gear from Jade and William. Lo and behold - Aunt Samantha is in town! And, yes, Asher is gazing adoringly at his grandad!

Overtime:
Great text from Jade today
"Asher was a terror last night. Then this morning has the audacity to yawn. What. A. Jerk."

Senses working overtime #211

1 Cool Uncle George

Great image of the cool fab with his sister Louise in America, 1963. Rest of the story is here in The Immortal Jukebox.

Bill Murray

...is appearing in The Dead Don't DieJim Jarmusch's zombie film. Reason enough to see it!

The curse of genius

Photo by Mike Fox on Unsplash

Really was absorbed by this article looking at how genius happens.

Lazarus - Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree
Speaking of genius - played this non-stop in the car this week.

The Lyrics
Interesting discussion about what the song means. I'm still trying to work out my own version.

Overtime: Warren Ellis

I love this sign off to his recent newsletter. I always wonder if it's a gee up for him and/or a message to us - his faithful hangers on to his every word.

Whatever.

I love it!

You are not bad or stupid or wrong, and you get to walk away from any idiot who insists otherwise. You are your own damn person and you get to run your own damn life. You're good. Hold on tight. See you next week.
