To be clear, the science supports using masks, with recent studies suggesting that they could save lives in different ways: research shows that they cut down the chances of both transmitting and catching the coronavirus, and some studies hint that masks might reduce the severity of infection if people do contract the disease.

Newman!
Wayne Knight stars in this advert for the mail. Yes, the mail. It never stops....

Twelve great movies are coming...sometime

Including On The Rocks - a repeat pairing of Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray. Looks great too!
An interesting article. An excerpt:

In some societies, such as the U.S. and Netherlands, people are largely driven by pursuits that benefit themselves. They’re expected to seek personal recognition and boost their own social or financial status.

In more collectivist societies, such as South Korea and Chile, high value is placed on the well-being of the larger group – typically their family, but also their workplace or country.

We found that the way parents discipline their children is strongly influenced by these social values, and likely serves to perpetuate these values from one generation to the next.

1 Why the brain forgets

When the pandemic ends...
by Thomas Oppong

Having picked up some new Woodstock soundtrack records (Woodstock 3 - a triple, and Woodstock 4 - a double album) I've been collating all my Woodstock related CDs, DVDs, record albums, magazines and books and put them in one place in The Shack (a.k.a. ARF). Oh, and I rewatched the movie again! It's still one brilliant piece of documentary film making some 50 years later kids.

Mount Tamalpais

During 2013 I went for a bike ride with Mike Rowbotham up Mount Tamalpais. I'll never forget it! Great views (SF far to the distant right), great homemade lemonade and music at the top.

Logical fallacies

The first 'debate' analysed well by The Washington Post and Vox. Why do they persist in calling these food fights 'debates'? The NZ version was no debate either. Bizarre.
Marvel's 616
A great piece from Rolling Stone, written while Bill was still around.

  Celebrating Country Diary

Paul Evans writes a great column for the Guardian. Here he is:

Country diary: the killer role of pollen in the hawkweed’s life cycle

The US election could break America

Let us not hedge about one thing. Donald Trump may win or lose, but he will never concede.

The Eruv explained. It's a fascinating explanation.
RIP Max Merritt

New Zealand's Billy Thorpe: Max Merritt had his first hit (the brilliant Get A Haircut) as a teenager in 1959 as Max Merritt and The Meteors and was a rock and roll powerhouse in the sixties along with Ray Columbus and the Invaders. In 1976 he had this massive hit in the southern hemisphere: Slipping Away

God bless Max.

Noah's Compass

I've moved onto my next Anne Tyler novel. It's excellent!

The eight secrets to a fairly fulfilled life

Optimism

Seth Godin on optimism:

Optimism is an attitude and a choice. It involves context and focus. We’re not deluding ourselves with the reassurance that everything is going to be okay (because that’s not productive). Instead, we’re committed to finding things we can contribute to, work on and improve. We’re devoted to seeking out useful lessons and to discovering where the benefit of the doubt might be helpful.

Punctuate!

My kids used this term recently and I drew a blank (which they thought was hilarious!!).

Overtime: WeChat

Interesting.

Our family uses WeChat to keep in touch with our eldest son in China. It's the only app that he could connect to when he moved there a few years ago. So his three siblings and my wife and I all joined up.

We use it purely as a communication tool and I had no idea there were other aspects to it.

But, as I like to say, "Who knows what's good or bad?"
