Senses working overtime #177

1 Starting to get into the swing of new routines now...
S0 eeking out some time to check the interweb links this week. And that's OK, OK?

Ever wondered where OK comes from?

2 Poetry corner returns and so does Margaret Atwood

3 The return of Seth Godin

Dumber angrier louder

When someone tries to engage you with a pitch that’s simple, visceral and more direct than you’re used to, it may be that their vitriol is hiding the fact that they’re afraid.
We race to the bottom, or we climb forward.
Stereotypes, shortcuts and shallow invective are effective in the short run, but they’re not useful, important or the best we can do.
4 Jim Carrey returns to TV

Samantha works on his new show, Kidding, a bit. It sounds like a great vehicle for young Jim.

5 I hate Spurs, so I love this...

Overtime: Van the man!
A compendium of stellar pieces from Thom Hickey on the great man.

Senses working overtime #176

1 House viewings

Two bed flat lower right

All about school starting this week, so no time for kicking back chillaxing with the interweb. Instead, in my avaiable spare time, I've been viewing potential houses to buy with Jacky.

We had an offer turned down on a place and so we're still at it. This one is the current front runner. Second viewing next week...

2 Pop Life

My nephew (pretty sure that's right - the son of my cousin) is a talented guy and I'm still enjoying immensely his musical journey through a gig a week for a year while battling depression and trying to locate where he fits in the world.

You can enjoy it too - get it from here!

3 The Choice

Edith Eger's extraordinary life is the fuel for this extraordinary autobiography. I've been reading it in tandem with Pop Life.

4 Shooter

This Netflix show has been our TV binge treat for the week. It's not that great but the abrupt violence keeps us entertained somehow.

5 Shearwater
Our Monday Night Album Club (MNAC) selection from last week was again on heavy rotation during this week.

Overtime: The Four Tops - Seven Lonely Nights
I sold their Night Lights Harmony album in a mad moment many years ago and found a mint copy up the road during the week from a funny little second hand book shop in Caterham On The Hill. It's only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday! One of those.

This song, lead off track, became an ear worm for the week. OMG - Levi Stubbs!!

Senses working overtime #174

1 Egypt Station

Our Paulie has a new album out on September 7. I've just finished the Mojo article about it and read the review. Sounds fab!! Two thumbs up. Can't wait!

I'm also digging the artwork - based on a painting done by Macca.

2 Poetry corner returns!

from Ars Poetica

I say I want to save the world but really
I want to write poems all day
I want to rise, write poems, go to sleep,
Write poems in my sleep
Make my dreams poems
Make my body a poem with beautiful clothes
I want my face to be a poem

Dorothea Lasky (2010)

3 Three Jeff Bezos questions to use for hiring talent

4 The Fugitive

I'm a fan. I watched it again recently in a hotel room. It stands up (even though I know it backwards. Why is that? The answer may be here).

5 Kant

Great piece on Immanuel Kant who was...well, read the article!

Overtime
For your listening pleasure this week - The Transit of Venus Across the Sun by Big Big Train has been on high rotation on Radio Wozza.

Senses working overtime #172

Flights to foreign lands produce a plethora of sensual experiences. Here's the latest clutch.

Blueberry pancakes with coffee butter and a side of bacon at EAT. Mmmmm.

2 Farmers' Market on Melrose

I watched the guy in the foreground as I stood in the queue for a smoothie - he was busy on his phone - didn't touch the food he'd ordered, got up and left it behind! Whaaat?

3 Cruising for burgers

Riding around north Hollywood and west Los Angeles with a couple of hot chicks.

4 Capitol Records

Caught sight of the iconic Capitol Records building on the way to Beverly Boulevard to buy one of those hot chicks some shoes. Guess which one!

5 Condo living at Klump Ave., Noho, LA.

Overtime
We started with food and we end with food - Cookies and cream pie at The Republic Of Pie (Noho, LA) in great company!

Senses working overtime #171

1 Delayed gratification
My blog posting schedule is out of whack somewhat as we've moved to an air b'n'b before we leave NZ. Unfortunately there is no internet/ cell phone coverage where we are but it is idyllic!

So, better late than never - here's my sensual selections for the last week: great lake views from our temporary place, birdsong and some movie catch-ups.

We have a DVD player so we went for Arrival and the second Kingsman movies. Of the two, Arrival was absorbing and worth my time. I can recommend that one (second Kingsman was disappointing).

2 Star Wars Episode IX

Exciting news - cast and crew for Episode IX. Read all about it!

3 Little Richard

He's been on my mind as he was the object of a Mojo piece on David Bowie. Great piece from the Immortal Jukebox.

4 Seth Godin - the truth about logos

Here’s a simple test:
Ask a few people to name a logo they like.
With very few exceptions, people will choose a logo that’s associated with a brand they admire.
That’s because what makes a good logo is a good brand, not the other way around.

5 Poetry Corner

I have to tell you

I have to tell you,
there are times when
the sun strikes me
like a gong,
and I remember everything,
even your ears.

Dorothea Grossman (2010)

Overtime - another great poem (which links us back to the lake from number 1 in a nifty way)

from Interlunar

We have come to the edge:
the lake gives off its hush;
in the outer night there is a barred owl
calling, like a moth
against the ear, from the far shore
which is invisible.
The lake, vast and dimensionless,
doubles everything, the stars,
the boulders, itself, even the darkness
that you can walk so long in
it becomes light.

Margaret Atwood (1984)
