Senses working overtime #264

Our Jacinda

We've got used to this image - the daily 1.00pm briefings
The NZ covid-19 response in a world context.

2 Must see movies

According to The Atlantic, you gotta see these 30 movies!

3 Poetry Corner

What's New?

My heart leaps, running for the stick
you never threw.

James Richardson (2016)

Three paths

Three paths for a soloist - Seth Godin

Consider one of three paths. Which works for you?
  1. Honor the noise in your head. Make the work you believe you were born to make. Create things you can visualize but haven’t seen yet. Do it without regard for critics, the market or the math of it all. It’s your handiwork.
  2. Embrace your market. Make what it needs. Earn a seat at the table by developing an asset, and leverage it to create real value for those you serve. Price it accordingly.
  3. Stay busy. Make slightly better than average work, for less than average pricing.
It’s difficult to see how you can do all three at the same time for the same kind of client. All three choices are valid, any could work for you, but it’s worth choosing.

Marga's story

This is a great story of a true survivor: Marga Steinhardt

Overtime: An American hero

This is the terrific real story of Henry Johnson

Senses working overtime #203

1 Nu Zild

This week we returned to live in New Zealand (above picture is pretty much the first thing you see as you arrive at Auckland Airport) so my senses have been filled with familiar sights and smells and sounds. New Zealand life is a lot more relaxed than the UK. A lot more!

2 North Hollywood

On the way home we stopped off in North Hollywood to visit with our eldest daughter. Noho has its own feel. Which we really liked btw. The smells are interesting for a start, with cannabis being legal.

While there I visited downtown and Amoeba Music. Right by the CNN building and Sunset Blvd. The biggest independent music store apparently. Luvverly!

3 John and Yoko's room

Baby, you're a rich man: exploiting a moment part 9 - Joko's honeymoon suite at the Amsterdam Hilton has been turned into a weird kind of corporate shrine. Go look.

4 Jacinda-mania part two

I loved this article about our PM which appeared in The Guardian before we left the UK. I read it out to my wife and got quite emotional.

5 Great advice

I've been chain reading books of late. This is great advice from Austin:

My last book was The Beatles On The Roof - excellent on the lead up to the roof session in January 1969 with great attention to detail.

I've stood on the footpath below and gazed up and wondered and this book fills in the gaps.

Overtime: In praise of WS Merwin (may he rest in peace)

Senses working overtime #131

1 Mmmm

2 It's Jacinda Time

Personally, I'm thrilled to have Jacinda Ardern as our new PM. Great choice Winston! She's a breath of fresh air and after nine years of no creditable opposition to the National establishment, we have a new leader. Let's do this!! Rock on!

3 Evil - call it!

Evil happens when good people do nothing. Tarantino should have spoken up against the Harvey Weinsteins!

4 Sonder
Seth Godin explains all.

5 Crossing Brooklyn Ferry
Now that you know about Sonder - read Walt Whitman's great poem - Crossing Brooklyn Ferry.

Overtime: Real life Up In The Air

It's been 43 exhausting weeks since Ben Schlappig slept in a bed that wasn't in a hotel, and he spends an average of six hours daily in the sky. He has a freewheeling itinerary, often planning his next destination upon hitting the airport. Just last week, he rocketed through Dallas, Dubai, Oman, Barcelona and Frankfurt. Yet for all his travel, it would be a mistake to call Schlappig a nomad. The moment that he whiffs the airless ambience of a pressurized cabin, he's home.

Read more about him here!

Senses working overtime #126

1 Calm...breathe

I love this photo.

2 Jon Hamm

Fancy a nice catch up with Jon?

3 Jacinda

You have to leave home to see the country clearly. So The Guardian have today's NZ election spot on.

4 Stop chasing perfection

Loved this latest piece from Thomas Oppong.

5 Longitudinal studies
I'm a sucker for these things. Try this one on for size - it follows thousands of superbright kids for four and a half decades, and provides a how to guide on raising a high-achiever.

Overtime: Crown shyness

I didn't know this was a thing. Read and see more here. It was the best thing on James Whatley's Five Things this week (great to have the king of weekly newsletters back btw).
